Definition:

Belly dance can be simply defined as "a solo dance performed by a woman with hips and abdominal movements.

Background:

Many believe that belly dancing is an ancient form of dance by taking origin from India to the Middle East. It is a type of dance usually performed when a woman is preparing for her wedding. It is usually danced barefoot.

Belly dance can be called as a Western term used for a form of traditional Arabic dance. In Arabic, it is known as "Raqs Sharqi" (belly dance), or "Raqs Baladi", which means the dance of the country. In Greece, it is called as "tsiftetelli." Raqs baladi is performed by men and women of any age group for fun and celebration. Raqs Sharqi, popular in America is also done by men and women.

Belly dance costumes:

The costumes used in belly dance are very colorful. In the early days, the wearing of jewelry in particular parts of the belt was thought to be a symbol of wealth. Other accessories used are swords, snakes, and huge candles burning. In Arabic, the costume used for this dance is called "bedlah" meaning trial, which was adopted by the Egyptian dancers in the 1930s, then spread to the rest of the country.

The costume consists of a top bedlah equipped (with a fringe of beads, coins), a fitted hip belt (also with a fringe of beads, coins) and skirt (straight or circular). In the Western world, "veil" is used, which is a tissue of 3.5 to 4 yard prominating arm movements across the dance.

In Egypt, dancers normally use fully beaded dresses, designed according to the type of dance. This type of costume is especially true for the folk dance and is popular among European and American countries.

In general, the belly dancing costume varies with the style of dance. The costume of cabaret belly dance is generally composed of a hip belt, bra, skirt, with one or more sails. Other accessories such as jewelry, neck bands, coatings arm, face and sailing shoes are considered optional for dancers.

Popularity

It is believed that the belly dance in America got popularity around 1893, when for the first time, a famous Egyptian dancer performed his little dance at the Chicago World's Fair. Since the 19th century, belly dance has a lot of popularity across the United States and worldwide as well. Many belly dance performances are held throughout the world.

The detailed information on belly dancing is not available, but there is a mixture of speculation about its history. Belly dance is a mixture of different cultures, including Lebanon, Egypt, the Arab Gulf, Turkey and North Africa. Morocco is supposed to have several references to oral origin, but it misses the fact the true origins of dance. Some suggest Roma origin, which are considered propagating dance during a trip by picking up the dance and spread around.
